New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer from The Perecman Firm Comments on Testimony Revealing NYPD Planted Drugs and Made False Arrests
New York civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman comments on the testimony revealing NYPD false arrests. A former NYPD detective caught in a corruption scandal testified that officers commonly fabricated drug charges against innocent people.
NEW YORK, NY, October 26, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A former New York City police department detective admitted that officers routinely planted drugs on innocent people to meet arrest quotas and made false arrests in New York.
The testimony of Stephan Anderson in Brooklyn Supreme Court, led to the arrests of eight police officers and a massive "shake up" of the Brooklyn South and Queens Narcotics units, according to the New York Daily News.
"Nobody is above the law, especially those sworn to defend it. Officers can not trample civil rights with little or no fear of recourse," said New York civil rights violation lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York's civil rights violation law firms.
The testimony stems from a 2008 arrest at a club in Queens. As by reported the New York Daily News, two brothers were accused of selling cocaine by undercover detectives, and arrested. The men returned to the club to request surveillance footage to prove their innocence. The footage showed that the two brothers never had any interaction with the undercover officers. The city paid $300,000 to settle the false arrest lawsuit, reported the New York Daily News, and two officers were indicted (Indictment #2755 of 2008) in Queens Supreme Court.
Anderson admitted in court that this was not first time an incident like this occurred and indicated that the scandalous civil rights violations in New York was widespread throughout the ranks.
The NYPD practice of planting drugs on innocent suspects cost the city $1.2 million to settle cases of false arrests, the New York Daily News reported.
"In order for the justice system to work it is critical that those we entrust to run the system are just," said New York civil rights violation lawyer Perecman.
